Huawei Mate XS 2 Review

Huawei Mate XS 2, Huawei’s fold phone, which is little bit different compared to most of the fordable currently available in the market , i have used this phone almost a weak. As a mobile technician i can judge the phone within a day, but to share a genuine real-time experience i have used it around a weak. In the week I’ve spent with this phone, what i have experienced, i’m going to be sharing with you, mainly a couple of things like specifications, how it really feels like to use on a daily and who I think this device is really for.

Specifications

Weight & Size

In terms of Weight, Huawei says that they’re really focusing on giving you a seamless one-handed experience. They do not want to have it very heavy like most fordable in the market. They are really focusing on bringing the weight down. But does it really truth? Yes! the weight for the mate XS 2 is actually approximately 255g, and that is significantly lower than most of the fordable out there like the Samsung fordable, OPPO fordable and even more fordable out there.

In the size department, Huweai mate XS 2 has different approach you can use it with one hand without having too much weight. It’s really quite comfortable to use it. Now, apart from that the way it falls is also a little bit different from other fordable. That is because it only has one large display, wheres most fordable in the market use two displays—one on the exterior and one on the interior.

Folding Mechanism

There is folding mechanism in that phone, which you can unfold the device. There is a button at the back where you press to unlock it and then it will actually extend out to a larger display. This is also a very cool design form factor because you do not have to waste an additional display at the front.

One thing i want Huawei to improve is that the mechanism of the folding display is a little bit rough at the moment. But if add some oil inside you can actually smoother out the mechanism because it just requires a little bit of strength to open up and close the folding display.

Design

In terms of the design, you do have your type c port right at the bottom, a dual stereo speakers at the back, a triple camera setup, which we will discuss in camera section below. At the back we have very interesting use of materials, i’m not sure what the exact material is but it is little bit of texture to the back. Which actually allows you to have more grip when you’re holding the device with one hand. If you hold this device with your right-hand, the camera array gives you a handle or something like that to hold it. Even more comfortably and even more securely.

I think the design is actually quite interesting definitely something new compared to the other fordable in the market. I know that there is an XS the first-gen is also using this concept. But I have not used it and i don’t how good the design was that.

Camera and Samples

There is triple camera setup, which is being led by a 50-megapixel main sensor, a 13 megapixel ultra-wide and last but not least an 8-megapixel telephoto lens. All of these three sensors are very useful if you are photography lover you may already know this. You do not get a macro lens and dev sensor on Huawei Mate XS 2. But the photo quality you get from this device is quit good, because there is a Leica collaboration in this devices camera. Battery and Charging

Battery is crucial aspect of any device, there is 4880 mAh battery on board in this device with a 66-watt fast charge. I actually do not have the official charging times from zero to 100 because the charger i got with Huawei Mate XS 2 was not original. Which almost taken around 40 to 45 minutes to fully charge. And with heavy usage the battery last around 5 hours. And that is not too bad.

Display specs

In terms of the display, I should throw you some numbers as well since we are talking about specifications. Well again to repeat if you close the device itself this is a 6.5-inch OLED display. If you extend the device it is a 7.8-inch OLED display. In terms of the resolution. It supports 120hz refresh rate. Other than that it supports one billion colors DCI p3. Overall that’s what you can get in terms of the display very nice contrast levels (very sharp) You do get more than 400 PPI Density. Everything is going to be crystal clear on the Huawei mate XS 2.

When it comes to the actual experience of using this type of display. Who is it really for and who really needs such a large display? Well, personally I would say that if you are someone who receives a lot of documents and just want to watch or read more content on a larger display without having to carry a separate tablet for that I think this is the perfect device. During my testing, I explored several tasks, which I have shared below:

Documents

The first one I want to share with you is in terms of reading documents these days. Actually I work with a lot of clients. They always send me all kinds of PowerPoint files and word documents. I think Reading it on a 6.5-inch display is quite typical of most smartphones today is very different from actually reading it on a larger 7.8-inch. With 7.8-inch display you will be able to see the full content easily like PowerPoint files work perfectly fine. It is also very smooth to scroll through the display because it has 120-hertz refresh rate. Everything is buttery smooth just reading it on the display and you know documents also feel so much easier to read on XS 2.

Internet Browsing

if you are browsing the internet a lot google chrome internet browsing or whatever you know you can actually again view a lot more content, even more, easier on a larger display.

There’s a multi-window feature that appears quite impressive. If you’re viewing it on a 6.5-inch screen, it’s not at all what you’d call small or anything like that. However, the whole experience is truly enhanced, or let’s say, it becomes even better when you have a larger display. You can easily access this with just a simple press of a button.

Gaming

Many user are here just to read about what does it feel like to actually game on something like this? Well i would say that at the moment a lot of games are not really optimized to actually leverage on a larger display. But I did play pubg as well as mobile legends.

I noticed that games works very well on the mate XS 2 because of it’s larger display. But there is a issue when you are gaming, there are some parts of game that actually get cropped for example if you are playing PUBG the map will appears cropped. But you won’t really feel this and will enjoy playing games and i hope in feature updates Huawei will solve this issue.
